Questions
Asked at the quay door
How long does a rope take?
Standard catalogue lengths ship from stock in two working days. Made-to-measure goes into the walk slots and runs about three weeks. Over 100 metres in one piece, allow a little more.
Can I visit during a live walk?
Only on a tour. The walk is a working floor and eleven people moving at pace; roped-off visitors get a better view from the office window anyway.
Do you sell to the public?
Yes. The retail shed is the same prices as the trade ledger, minus the trade discount, which is honest. Twine, offcuts and mats need no appointment at all.
What is the proof crane?
The crane on the quay that tests every rope to a fifth over its working figure before it leaves the yard. It has run since 1891 and its numbers are all in the ledger.
Can you repair rope I bought elsewhere?
The bench takes outside work on the same terms. If the rope is beyond saving, the rigger will tell you plainly, and usually the bin at the shed door is where it goes rather than the bench.
Is any of this real?
No. This is a fictional demonstration website. The yard, the crew, the river and every price are invented.
