Visit the yard
Coalwick Quay, east bank of the river Brant. Follow the tar smell; it is not as bad as it sounds, and it means you are nearly here.
Getting here
The quay is a twelve-minute walk from Brantside station, signposted from the bridge. The 6 bus stops at the foot of Coalwick Lane. Drivers park at the granary car park; the quay itself is pedestrian.
Accessibility
The office, retail shed and museum are step-free. The ropewalk itself has two shallow steps at the north door; the yard keeps a portable ramp at the office, ask when you book a tour.
Dogs
Well-behaved dogs welcome everywhere except the walk itself during a live pass. The yard dog, Biscuit, arbitrates.
On the quay
The tearoom next door does the best seed cake on the river and will warm your hands whether you buy or not. The granary car park is free on Saturdays. The proof crane is visible from the bridge and worth the look even if you never come in.
Gifts
The retail shed sells twine on cedar bobbins, offcut mats, and rope mats made from trade-in lines. Everything is made on the walk behind the shed door, which is open when the yard is.
